1966, 117 minutes

On the occasion of the 52nd anniversary of the launch of the Algerian Revolution, OUACS is showing one of the most influential films in the history of political cinema. Gillo Pontecorvo’s The Battle of Algiers focuses on the harrowing events of 1957, a key year in Algeria’s struggle for independence from France. Shot in the streets of Algiers in documentary style with unforgetable music by the great Ennio Morricone , the film vividly recreates the tumultuous Algerian uprising against the occupying French in the 1950s. The French win the battle, but ultimately lose the war as the Algerian people demonstrate that they will no longer be suppressed.

Date: Thursday 2nd November, 7:30pm

Location: St Antony’s College, Nissan Lecture Theatre

On Monday 23rd of October 2006, OUACS was honoured to host a talk by Professor Fawaz Trabulsi and chaired by Dr. Karma Nabulsi .

Professor Fawaz Trabulsi is a renowned Arab historian, public intellectual and a former Lebanese political leader. He has authored numerous book on Arab culture, politics and history as well as a critically acclaimed autobiography. He has most recently completed “A History of Modern Lebanon,” the most extensive study of the country to date.
Dr Karma Nabulsi is Politics Fellow at St Edmund Hall and a University Lecturer in International Relations. She is a former PLO representative and a leading expert on the laws of war and the international relations of the Middle East. Dr Nabulsi is the author “Traditions of War: Occupation, Resistance, and the Law,” an authoritative study in the field. She is also regular contributor to the Guardian Newspaper.
Professor Trabulsi analyzed the nature of the “New Middle East” and gave an expert analysis on the wars in Palestine and Lebanon. The talk was followed by a dinner and informal gathering at Al Salam Restaurant. OUACS wishes to express its sincere gratitude to Professor Trabulsi and Dr. Nabulsi and hopes that they will visit us again in the near future. A special thanks as well to all those who attended the talk, and we hope to see you soon at our next event!
